Jean Schwarzbauer studies the mechanisms that underlie extracellular matrix regulation of cell functions. She has developed three-dimensional matrix model systems that recapitulate the in vivo architecture of tissues. These systems are being used to dissect receptor-mediated extracellular matrix assembly by normal and tumor cells and to define mechanisms of cell regulation through extracellular matrix activation of intracellular signaling pathways. She is also using the nematode C. elegans in genetic approaches to identify key signals during tissue morphogenesis.
