Giacinto Scoles

Donner Professor of Science, Emeritus;
Professor of Chemistry, Emeritus
Visiting Senior Research Chemist
"Libera Docenza" in Materials Science 1964, University of Genova

Prof. Scoles at present divides his time more or less equally between three institutions. He teaches at PU in the fall a course on the Physics and Chemistry of Nanomaterials and conducts research on the application of conductive tip atomic force microscopy (AFM ) to molecular electronics, the physical properties on electrical nanocontacts and the study of protein interactions on and with surfaces. In the Chemistry Department he collaborates with Prof. Kevin Lehmann in developing the use of nanodroplets of highly quantum fluids as novel spectroscopic matrices. In the winter and spring he is part time professor in the Departments of Biophysics and Condensed Matter Physics of the International School for Advanced Studies in Trieste ( Italy) and he is long term collaborator at the Elettra Synchrotron Laboratory in the same city. In Italy Scoles has recently set up an AFM lab for the optimization of DNA handling and analysis and for the study of protein/DNA and protein/membrane interactions.
