CEG member Phillip Hannam from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs led a lunch discussion on China’s coal power sector on Friday. It was the first lunch seminar after the new board members were elected.

Over the past 25 years, China has accessed the most efficient coal power technologies through foreign firms, and then localized their use and manufacture. Today China is emerging as a global technology supplier. Phil’s talk was focused on how this happened, the technologies and policies associated with the transition, and the implications to other developing countries.

CEG members specializing in combustion sciences provided their insights into the cutting-‐edge coal combustion technologies. Other CEG members talked about how this transition will affect China’s energy and environmental policies in the future. Phil's seminar is a successful kick-off for the 2013-14 CEG lunch seminars series. There are more interesting topics expected to come.
