Language Requirements
Expertise in a core language of Eurasia is central to the program. Applicable languages include Russian, Turkish, and Polish and the languages of Southeastern Europe (Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian, Bulgarian and Romanian). Students whose primary language is Russian must successfully complete one Russian language course beyond 207, or otherwise achieve this level of competence. Students in the program whose focus is Turkish, Polish, or one of the Balkan languages must complete the equivalent of the second year in that language. Native speakers and students with previous training in any of the languages of Eurasia can fulfill the language requirement by passing a placement test.

Summer Language Study

With funding from the Program in Russian and Eurasian Studies and the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures has organized the highly acclaimed language program, Princeton in St. Petersburg. The program is held at the Nevsky Institute of Language and Culture. It is designed to enable students who complete their first year of Russian language studies on the Princeton campus (RUS 101 and 102) to take the second-year course during a two-month long summer experience in St. Petersburg, the cultural capital of Russia.

The Program in Russian and Eurasian Studies also supports summer study abroad of third- and fourth- year Russian, thanks to the generosity of the Monty Raiser '92 Fund. The fund was established in 1993 in memory of R. Montgomery Raiser III, a Princeton student who had a strong interest in Russian affairs.

In addition, the Department of Near Eastern Studies supports summer study abroad of the Turkish language.

Summer Internships

Certificate students are encouraged to consider an internship over the summer in Russia or in other Eurasian countries. Princeton students have had internships at Alfa Capital, ABC, CNN, and Newsweek in Moscow, the American embassies in Russia and Belarus, a Russian orphanage, and a major Russian oil company.  Through the Princeton-in-Asia program, students have been placed with organizations located in successor states to the former USSR, such as Kazakhstan.  Internship listings can be found at the University's Office of International Programs.
