Stuart Leland joined Princeton University to lead the Office of Research Integrity and Assurance (RIA) in August 2012. Stu received his formal education from Cornell (BS/83), UC Davis (DVM/88), Michigan State (intern/89), and Yale (Postdoctoral Fellow/96). He held academic positions at the University of Pennsylvania and the Institute for Human Gene Therapy before joining the private pharmaceutical sector with Aventis, Wyeth/Pfizer, and Merck. Stuart is board certified by the American College of Laboratory Medicine (ACLAM). He is on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine and previously served on the faculty at MCP Hanneman/Drexel University in their Masters in Laboratory Animal Science program. Stuart holds leadership roles in a number of laboratory animal professional groups including AALAS and ACLAM and continues to perform outreach to the community about the importance of biomedical research. Ellen DiPippo, Administrative Coordinator

Ellen DiPippo joined the staff of Research Integrity and Assurance in 2013, but has been part of the Princeton community since 2008. Previously, she was the Academic Administrator of the Bendheim Center for Finance, overseeing all academic components of both the Master in Finance and Undergraduate Finance Certificate programs. Before joining the Princeton staff, Ellen had extensive administrative experience at Harvard University and as an economic recruiter in the private sector. Ellen has been a music educator for over 30 years in both elementary and private settings. She received her bachelor’s degree in music education from Youngstown State University. Ellen lives in Princeton with her husband Stephen, children Kathryn and Paul, and West Highland Terrier, Moe, where she is involved in several community service organizations.

Pam Straeter joined the office of Research Integrity & Assurance in October 2012 as Assistant Director with oversight responsibilities for the IACUC, IBC & FCOI. Prior to coming to Princeton University, she worked in operations management & compliance positions for several pharmaceutical companies including Bristol-Myers Squibb, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and Merck Sharp & Dohme. Pam has a Master of Science in Management, is a Registered Laboratory Animal Technologist, Certified Manager of Animal Resources, Certified Professional IACUC Administrator and a graduate of the Institute for Laboratory Animal Management. She is actively involved in various professional organizations and serves as the National AALAS District 2 Board of Trustee, AALAS Foundation Board of Director and Delaware Valley Branch of AALAS President-Elect. Pam has 4 children, 6 grandchildren and lives in Burlington Township with her husband.

Robert Scalese joined Princeton University within the office of Research Integrity and Assurance administrating both the Institutional Biosafety Committee and Conflict of Interest in Research area. Bob received his formal education from the Pennsylvania State University (BS/83, MS/86). Upon graduation he began his career working for Bristol Myers Squibb with the Department of Pharmacology in drug development. He accepted continual growth opportunities while acquiring extensive experience in aseptic surgery, anesthesia, imaging, drug delivery, and veterinary clinical medicine. He also managed a two site team that was responsible for animal model development, project support, enrichment, clinical care and colony health of all animals at both facilities. He also served as a voting member for the IACUC. More recently, Bob worked as a consultant in surgical animal model development for Columbia University and Covance Research Products. Bob lives in Philadelphia, Pa with his wife, Trisha, and 4 children, Daniel, Michael, Carter and Lila. He is an avid music collector.
Sheera Gaskin, Research Compliance Specialist

Sheera Gaskin joined the office of Research Integrity and Assurance in February 2016 to implement a post-approval monitoring compliance program for the IACUC, IRB, and IBC. Sheera earned her Master’s degree in Laboratory Animal Science from Drexel University. She is an AVMA accredited Graduate Veterinary Technologist, and a PRIM&R Certified Professional IACUC Administrator. Sheera has worked in the field of veterinary medicine since 1997, specializing in emergency medicine and anesthesia since 2003. She has served on an IACUC since 2002, and has specialized in animal research and compliance since 2007. Sheera has been the recipient of the Bio-Serv Enhancement and Improvement of Animal Welfare Award 2012 and the Drexel University Academic Achievement Award 2007-2009. Sheera is an adjunct professor and has served as the IACUC Chair at Camden County College since 2012. She is a member of the National Honors Society and professional organizations including DVB AALAS, National AALAS, PRIM&R, NABR, NJABR, NJVTA, IACUCAA, and PSBR. Sheera is active in public outreach that involves educating the public on the humane use of animals in research and the important role of the IACUC. Sheera enjoys cooking and spending time with her husband Tim and son Elijah.
Jennifer (J.) Pass, Compliance Administrator

Jennifer (J.) Pass joined RIA in early 2012 and is a Certified Professional IACUC Administrator. She’s had a long in vivo career, working at Merck Pharmaceuticals, at Georgetown University and in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. J. has specialized in surgical research most of her career and is also a certified Laboratory Animal Technologist. She’s served as a voting member on two Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees and was a member of a human heart and lung transplant team while in Los Angeles. J. has a great deal of personal pride as a self-identified nerd and continues to pursue interests in computers and information technology. She lives with her partner in New Jersey.

Chad Pettengill has worked for the IRBs of the University of South Florida, University of California, San Diego and, most recently, Temple University where he served as IRB Director. Prior to his career in human subjects research, Chad was an attorney for the University of South Florida. Chad has a B.A. in Psychology from the University of South Florida, a Masters in International Business from the University of San Diego, and a Juris Doctorate from Mercer University. In his spare time, Chad likes riding rollercoasters.

Paul Hryvniak joined Princeton University’s Office of Research Integrity and Assurance as a Compliance Administrator in May of 2016. Prior to Princeton, Paul served as an IRB Review Specialist at the Harvard School of Public Health/Harvard Medical School IRB and at the Boston University School of Public Health. He received a BA in English from Rutgers University and a MS in Bioethics from Union Graduate College/Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Elaine Baszczewski has over 12 years of experience serving the research community in both academia and industry. Her interests in research, education, and ethics led her to various regulatory, analyst, and database management positions within the clinical research arena, four years of which she spent supporting the IRB operations at the UMDNJ (now Rutgers) IRB. Elaine has a B.A. in both Psychology and English literature from Rutgers University, and an M.A. in Education from the University of Phoenix. In her current position at Princeton’s Office of Research Integrity and Assurance, she coordinates the intake, review and approval process of human subjects research proposals and manages its database.

As Senior Project Manager Martin Harrison oversees a suite of research administration software applications for the Research Integrity & Assurance and Laboratory Animal Resources departments. Martin’s responsibilities include system selection, deployment planning, gathering requirements, overseeing system implementation and testing, vendor management, and production support. Martin has more than 25 years of experience in software development, leading technical teams, and managing technical outsourcing agreements. Martin has been a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) since January 2006. Prior to coming to Princeton, Martin worked twelve years at IBM supporting a variety of clients in markets such as clinical trials, consumer goods and telecommunications. Martin also previously worked as a member of the technical staff at Lucent Technologies / Bell Labs, as a Senior Programmer at Dow Jones, and as a Senior Technical Specialist at AT&T where he developed financial software. Martin holds a bachelor of science from Rider University in Decision Sciences and Computers.
