IRB Member: Quick Start Guide
| Guidelines |
In consultation with IRB Staff and Department Chairs, the IRB Chair selects well qualified candidates from among Princeton University faculty, staff, and surrounding community to become members of the IRB. Upon selection, each member must complete and submit, for IRB records, the listed documents prior to attending an IRB meeting.
An orientation session is recommended for new members to ensure that all new have a solid foundation in theory, regulations, and practical skills necessary to ensure the adequate protections for human subjects participating in research conducted by faculty, students, staff and affiliates of Princeton University.
Prior to participating fully in IRB meetings, all new members must also: observe a Princeton IRB meeting before voting; complete the CITI online training program (if not currently certified); and review Human Research Protection Program SOP. All are encouraged to become familiar with the Code of Federal Regulations governing the protection of human research subjects per CFR Title 45 Part 46, and the Belmont Report/Common Rule.
All Board members should become familiar with Princeton’s IRB review checklists and related applications for expedited review, initial review, amendments, continuing reviews, unanticipated problems etc., that are used by the IRB for review of proposed research at Princeton.
New members are also encouraged to review additional useful guidance documents pertaining to categories of review, list of commonly used identifiers, OHRP decision charts and educational videos. Topics include: Reviewing & Reporting Unanticipated Problems/Events, IRB Consent Requirements, IRB Membership, Research Involving Vulnerable Populations and IRB Records.
| Expectations |

In addition to attending all meetings, members are expected to review all applications on the agenda, and the prior meeting minutes before the monthly IRB meetings. Please notify the Compliance Administrator at least two weeks prior to the next meeting , if you cannot attend, so we can assure adequate coverage for reviews and for a quorum.
Notify IRB staff immediately if you have difficulty accessing the portfolio when conducting reviews so that they may assist you further. |
