Summer & Research Funding
There are many funding sources open to undergraduates, but the process of seeking funding is decentralized. Be prepared to do some footwork to fund your summer project or research! The Office of International Programs maintains a general list of funding available for academic projects, so that's a good place to start.
Student Activities Funding Engine (SAFE)
The Student Activities Funding Engine (SAFE) is a central portal for applying for Princeton funding in support of a wide variety of student activities, for example an internship, senior thesis research, summer study abroad, or individual travel to a conference. Simply log on with your Princeton netid and password. You can begin looking by clicking on “search for funding.” After submitting some information, you will be matched with potential funders according to the funding criteria. You can return to SAFE as often as you like to see if new funding opportunities have become available.
Academic Departments
Academic departments and programs at Princeton may have funds to support student projects or research; contact the appropriate departments directly.
Civic Engagement Projects and Internships
Projects that are focused on public service or civic engagement may be eligible for funding through the Pace Center. Pace also sponsors summer internships in public service. The Princeton Internships in Civic Service are another great option for paid summer internships in non-profit organizations. Students who are interested in applying their academics through hands-on research about issues facing communities may qualify for summer or thesis funding through the Community Based Learning Initiative. The Office of Financial Aid offers summer savings replacement to students participating in unpaid summer service programs.
Summer Courses & Study Abroad
Summer courses are generally not eligible for Princeton funding unless they are through the University (for example, the PIIRS Global Seminars, Princeton in Beijing, etc). The Office of Financial Aid may be able to help students secure a loan to pay for summer study. There may be limited funds for summer language study and study abroad available through the Student Activities Funding Engine. For other summer courses taken for credit, the Office of Financial Aid may offer aid recipients student loans.
Grand Challenges Internship Program
Students interested in the environment or public health may want to investigate the Grand Challenges program, sponsored by the Princeton Environmental Institute.
International Internship Program
The International Internship Program (IIP) funds special summer internships that are available only to Princeton students. The application process is competitive; attend fall information sessions for more details. There are limited funds available to support non-IIP internships.
Alumni Association Funds
A few alumni funds include money for thesis research and other academic work. For more information, see the Alumni Association Funding Guide.
Senior Thesis Funding
The Office of the Dean of the College supports grants for thesis research: they are available for the summer before senior year, as well as for research conducted during term-time. Spring term juniors will receive an email from Dean Claire Fowler with application details and dates: be sure to pay attention to the deadlines! Departments may have additional funds to support thesis research.
