Committee to Strengthen University Management and Resources

SUMAR, a cabinet-level committee chaired by the University's executive vice president, sponsors initiatives to strengthen University management functions, implement cost-controlling measures, and ensure regulatory compliance. In this way, SUMAR acts as a catalyzing agent for campus-wide projects that will have significant, positive institutional impacts and ultimately enable the release or focus of resources toward teaching, research, and the student experience. The committee focuses its efforts on projects that fit the following criteria:

  • Represent cross-cutting, campus-wide initiatives that require the efforts of multiple University units;
  • Require significant cultural or policy change, and therefore benefit from the attention and support from this cabinet-level committee; and/or
  • Benefit from SUMAR members’ organizational roles, expertise, and broad departmental representation, affording broad institutional perspectives that would not be found in a single department.

SUMAR is proactive in identifying, evaluating, and potentially sponsoring select initiatives of large-scale impact that meet the criteria above. SUMAR will determine whether there are promising, scalable initiatives that would benefit from centralized oversight; consider the costs and benefits of a proposed initiative with particular attention to the impact on business units and individuals within the University community; and guide and monitor the progress of selected initiatives against defined goals and metrics.
