How is the SCAD Program Funded?

Once a department is approved for a SCAD subsidy by the Provost, the Budget Office is notified of the details regarding the new hire. For FY2013, subsidy eligible departments will receive a contribution from the Provost for 50% of the SCAD’s salary plus benefits up to the maximum of $17,400. In addition, each department participating in the SCAD Program is charged a fee equivalent to 5% of the SCAD’s salary plus benefits to help offset OIT’s costs of running the program. The benefits rate for FY2013 is 34.6% for academic departments.

Example 1

An Academic Department hires a 100% duty time SCAD with salary equal to $50,000
($67,000 including benefits):

                                 Total SCAD Salary:

Salary + Benefits
$50,000 + $17,300

   $ 67,300.00
                SCAD Subsidy from Provost:

Minimum of $67,300 * 50%
Minimum of ($33,650,$17,400)

 - $ 17,400.00
                                                   OIT Fee:    5% * $67,300  +   $3,365.00
                        Net Cost to Department:    $67,300 - $17,400 + $3,365    $ 53,265.00

Example 2

Department A and Department B share a SCAD equally, so each receives .5 FTE (50% duty time) support.

The salary for the SCAD is $45,000
($60,570 including benefits; 50% salary + benefits = $30,285)

Department A and B receive exactly the same amounts:

    SCAD Salary per Department:

Salary + Benefits
($45,000 + $15,570) / 2

  $ 30,285.00
      SCAD Subsidy from Provost:

Minimum of ($30,285 * 50%, $17,400)
Minimum of ($15,143, $17,400)

-  $15,143.00
                                      OIT Fee:     5% * $30,285 +   $1,514.00
            Net Cost to Department:     $30,285 - $15,143 + $1514   $ 16,656.00
