What is an unconference?

An unconference is a participant-driven meeting.  This year’s IT Unconference is brought to you by the Office of Information Technology.  Participates are welcome from a wide range of disciplines throughout the university community. This will be the first unconference related to technology to be held on campus and is scheduled for Thursday, June 4, 2015, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at 701 Carnegie Center.

Unconferences often use variations on Open Space Technology. They focus on a specific purpose and begin without any formal agenda.  Topics are determined by the attendees at the beginning at a general assembly.  Anyone who wants to initiate a discussion on a topic can claim a time and a space.  Attendees decide which session to attend and are expected to contribute to session activities.

Throughout the day, participants determine if a session is beneficial or can decide to move on to another topic.  Unconferences typically feature open discussions rather than having a single speaker at the front of the room giving a talk, although any format is permitted.

Sessions are informal where the attendees group together based on a shared interest and carry out discussions without any pre-planned agenda.  A central focus will be this site where you can add your profile, follow or update session information, make comments, and follow the #puituncon twitter feed throughout the day.

The conference will conclude with a final gathering to ask questions, submit your feedback, or just decompress with friends and colleagues to hash out what you learned.
