A Mine of Information
August 4, 2011
Author Ian Fyfe, talks about the information buried deep beneath the Earth's surface. This information can tell us a lot about our own planet and beyond, but getting down there to have a look involves overcoming physical and technical challenges, as well as significant danger.
"The focus of Onstott's work is not the geology at these depths, but the biology. He and his colleagues collect samples, mainly by filtering fracture water from the rock, and analyse the microbiology that is captured.
According to Onstott, with this type of work, it is not the dangers of the mine that are the biggest problem, but the technical and physical challenges.
When analysing the life in the deep subsurface, it is essential to avoid contaminating samples with organisms brought down from the surface. To avoid this, filters used for capturing organisms are sterilised, and boreholes that the water is collected from are usually drained before filtering to flush any contamination out." ...
