Latin American Film Festival - "Iracema - Uma Transa Amazonica" (1976)
In 1970, a young girl named Iracema travels to Belem to begin a life of prostitution. As she travels the newly-built Transamazonica highway, the destruction of the rainforest (under the premise of "industrialization") parallels her own descent into a world ravaged by poverty, greed, and ugliness. Iracema -- whose name references the classic indigenist novel by Jose de Alencar -- becomes a symbol of Brazil, where "progress" is often accompanied by violence and destruction. Organized by the Program in Latin American Studies, co-sponsored by Rocky College and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Cultures.
