Living on the Edge: Marginality and Border-Crossings in "Terra Estrangeira"

Directed by Walter Salles Jr. (The Motorcycle Diaries, Central Station) and Daniela Thomas, ‘Terra Estrangeira’ (1996) is a film about a generation and a country in crisis. In March of 1990, Brazil is thrown into chaos, and more than 800,000 young Brazilians have to leave their country to search for new opportunities. Paco, an aspiring actor from Sao Paulo, longs to leave his native Brazil. Alex, a Brazilian woman living in Lisbon, Portugal, faces the crude reality of making ends meet in another country. When Paco accepts to travel to Lisbon carrying a violin filled with uncut diamonds for a shady antique dealer their lives collide.
