Ana Fernandez Cebrian

  • Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Cultures
Position: Graduate Student

Ana Fernández Cebrián is a Ph.D. candidate in the Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Cultures Department at Princeton University. She completed her B.A. in Hispanic Languages and Literatures and her M.A. in Second Language Acquisition and Migration Studies at the University of Zaragoza (Spain). Her research focuses on the important historical shifts pertaining ideological production from the Second Republic to late Francoist Spain and the Spanish Transition, with a special emphasis on literature, cultural studies, film, and media. Her dissertation, entitled “Fábulas del desarrollo: capitalismo e imaginarios sociales en España (1950-1975)” [Fables of development: capitalism and social imaginaries in Spain (1950-1975)], explores different narratives of development in cultural fictions and collective social life within the context of the turn from autarchy to the so-called Spanish economic miracle. Global accounts of “progress”, modernity and consumer satisfaction, she argues, confront in Spain the expectations of a social majority living in a situation of scarcity and poverty, spawning a very peculiar set of narratives (providential narratives) that will determine the specificity of the Spanish transition to the post-fordist model. On track to be defended by the end of this academic year, this dissertation has been or is going to be partially presented at the NeMLA and MLA conferences, among other venues. Fernández Cebrián has also published articles on Ramón Gómez de la Serna and the international avant-garde, as well as Quixotism and the literary field in Primo de Rivera dictatorship. Her latest article, on domesticity and consumer society in the Spanish Cinema of the Fifties, is going to be published in the forthcoming number of Revista Hispánica Moderna.
