Lyndon Despard Estes

My primary interest is applied ecological research in support of active conservation projects in East and southern Africa. As a former park manager, I am particularly interested in understanding (and influencing) how human activity affects wildlands and protected areas. Another important focus is rare species conservation, particularly a project to re-establish Kenya's mountain bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci) populations (see here for more information).

My main methodological approach is to combine field data and remote sensing to generate input for spatial distribution/predictive habitat models. I am also interested in using landscape simulators to understand the dynamic nature of predictor variables, and how their change might influence habitat structure and availability.

I will be working with Professors Wilcove and Oppenheimer and Dr. Bethany Bradley to understand how agriculture in South Africa might respond to climate change, and how this response will impact South African biodiversity and ecosystems.
