Study Abroad

One of the biggest opportunities to explore at Princeton is the Study Abroad Program. Princeton offers many international options and is very supportive and cooperative both in finding financial aid and giving academic credit. For many people, study abroad provides an excellent occasion to experience a different culture, brush up on language skills and make new friends. If you feel you can't spare a semester for foreign study, think about enrolling in an international summer program. The administration is working hard to expand study abroad possibilities. Check out the program guide online for more information, or go to their office (36 University Place, above the U-Store) to pick up a booklet and review the resources there.

Bridge Year Program

In early 2008, President Tilghman proposed a bridge year program that will allow incoming freshmen to spend nine months abroad in public service work placements in another country before starting their undergraduate careers. This year, about 20 students will be selected for placement in four countries, where they will volunteer, live with a local family and learn the local language alongside a small group of their peers. The program is a part of the new “Princeton in the World” initiative, which aims to map out an international vision for the University.

Make sure to start thinking about your study abroad experience early. Princeton students are encouraged to study abroad, but this means planning ahead to make sure your departmental requirements are in order. Once this is done, many students find studying overseas to be a life-changing experience.
