Rules & Regs
The Do's
You are allowed to have the following: irons, electric blankets, hair dryers, electric curlers, clothes steamers and the various models of kettles, coffeemakers and popcorn poppers that have been approved by the University. Check out the authorized appliances list before you shop.
You are allowed to personalize your room, within reason: hang posters, move furniture, buy draperies, etc. But watch for the following . . .
The Don't's
Major no-no's: halogen lamps, microwave ovens in unauthorized rooms, large refrigerators, toasters or toaster ovens, candles, hot pots, most coffeemakers or any other things that are electrical and/or heat-producing.
Don't use permanent adhesives to put posters on your walls. Anything sticky must come off in May.
Don't make lots of permanent marks in the walls, such as nail holes. A few are O.K. (picture frames, bulletin boards), but don't push it.
Don't attach anything to your ceiling.
Don't attach anything to your door. Ever. They actually fine you for this because they think Princeton students won’t be able to find their own door in the event of a fire.
Don't keep your door propped open.
Don't block or prop open fire doors.
Don't cook in your room.
Don't hang anything in front of or from smoke detectors, fire alarms or sprinkler components; don’t misuse fire extinguishers.
Don't build a loft without consulting regulations in the booklet "Making Yourself at Home." (You can pick up a copy in MacMillan.)
Don't hang cloth from your wall. The fire inspectors have cracked down heavily on "tapestries," of any size. This applies to things hanging outside your window as well, including flags.
Don't make any major changes to your room (like building an Olympic-size pool -- not that you'll have that option in most rooms) without consulting the Housing Department first.
When in doubt, consult the official catalog of rules in the Undergraduate Housing Guide or just give them a call and ask (8-3460).
