Accountable Policing
An effective police service, firmly under the control of civilian authorities, is a key institution in a post-conflict or fragile setting. Without security, people are less likely to invest and do the things that help generate economic growth. Security has many dimensions, but one is certainly protection from injury and theft. Police officers can play a critical role. In addition to fighting crime, they manage crowds, provide security for elections and help communities resolve disputes. In this part of the site, users can find a growing body of information on such topics as community policing, recruitment and training, and controlling corruption within the ranks of the police force, as well as thorny issues such as integrating and amalgamating different police units, including rebel or opposition groups, into a new unified police service.
