Civic Engagement Initiatives
Student Environmental Communication Network (SECN) - "Communicating Sustainability" project. Summer Training Intensive for Princeton students. A four-week program to train students to explore pressing issues in sustainability through audio and video production. Funding included support for two instructors; room, board and stipend for 8 students; audio/video equipment; local travel; guest speakers; and a public screening of student work. Ecology Representative Program - The EcoReps are students employed by the University to develop peer-to-peer education and advocacy programs around recycling, water and energy conservation. Funding includes support to expand the EcoReps program to include recycling and donation support for Reunions and end-of-year move out, athletic events, participation in the national RecycleMania, and collaboration with other student groups to enhance student conservation behavior.
Outdoor Action (OA) - An initiative to assess the sustainable operations of OA programs, develop and implement sustainability curriculum for leader training, and produce an OA Sustainability Guide. Funding included summer student internships, a curriculum consultant, an additional half-day of leader training, and July/Aug intern housing. Proposer: Rich Curtis
Forbes Garden Project - A student initiative to design and implement expansion of the organic demonstration garden to a larger lot near Forbes College. The garden design was adapted from designs proposed during a School of Architecture garden design competition in the spring of 2008. The garden now features a large area of growing beds, a food washing and preparation area, and seating for gatherings and events. High Meadows provided funding for tools, site prep, supplies, and summer stipends for student leaders. Proposer: Stephanie Hill '10
Greening Princeton Farmers' Market - One of the only student-run local farmers markets in the country, this funding allowed the market to obtain permits, publicize the event, and continue through Fall 08. High Meadows provided funding for the spring and fall 2008 markets; including one-time permit fees, a market tent, and promotional materials. Proposer: Kathryn Anderson '08
Bicycle and Pedestrian Program - Support for a student-run program (UBikes) operating out of Forbes College that refurbishes abandoned bicycles, loans them to Princeton students for reuse, and offers bike repair clinics. Funding also supported the piloting of new bicycles with minimal maintenance needs for the campus bike loan program. Funding also supported the production of Princeton's first Campus Bicycle Map. This funding provided bicycles, tools, helmets, locks, advertising, and a bike map intern. Proposer: Jeff Domanski
CFL Bulb Exchange Program - A student-run program initiated by the class of 2010 and now managed by the student group Greening Princeton. Over 3000 compact flourescent bulbs were distributed to university students, staff, and faculty. The program includes development of a survey to track bulb use and breakage over time, as well as collaboration with the Purchasing Department to establish bulb recycling protocol. Transportation Demand Management Program - An effort led by the Department of Transportation and Parking, TDM will assess opportunities to encourage sustainable transportation options for campus community members and reduce the campus environmental footprint associated with commuting and parking. Sustainable Purchasing Initiative - Led by the Purchasing Department, this effort supports interns in developing a Life Cycle Assessment program for purchasing decision-making not only in Central Purchasing but across campus. Contact: Don Weston
Office of Sustainability Internship Program - Support for student engagement with Office of Sustainability initiatives ranging from communications efforts and research, to project management and coordination. Contact: Shana Weber
Education and Research Initiatives
School of Architecture/Civil and Environmental Engineering - Urban and ecological adaptation design and hydrological modeling project. Includes student involvement as research team members. Proposers: Guy Nordenson, Jim Smith
The Keller Center for Innovation in Engineering Education - Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) courses for the 2008-2009 academic year. Paired with support from the Dean of the College, High Meadows provided funding for tech support for a Trenton energy audit and greening retrofitting project. It also awarded funds for a part time technician for equipment and data analysis. Proposers: Catherine Peters, Mike Littman, Sharad Malik
The Princeton Environmental Institute (PEI) - Environmental Challenges and Sustainable Solutions project. With additional support from the University Community Based Learning Initiative (CBLI), High Meadows provided funding for equipment and a part time technician to continue water quality sampling and data collection at Lake Carnegie.
