The Council on Science and Technology, in cooperation with the science and engineering departments, fosters the teaching of science and technology for students specializing in the humanities and social sciences. A principal responsibility of the council is to encourage the development of high-quality courses in which undergraduates can satisfy the University science and technology (ST) distribution requirements. The council has responsibility for approving the science and technology with laboratory course designation (STL) and the nonlaboratory science course designation (STN) for science and engineering courses that are not departmentals and would be appropriate for students concentrating in the humanities and social sciences. The council assists faculty members in developing new courses and revising existing ones, and encourages the exchange of ideas and experiences among faculty members. In addition, the Council on Science and Technology sponsors lunchtime seminars with scientists who are acclaimed for their teaching methods, as well as the annual Evnin Lecture, featuring a prominent scientist on a topic of interest to the general public.

The Council on Science and Technology is currently actively promoting the development of new STL (lab) and STN (nonlab) courses to fulfill the science and technology distribution requirements. The council is employing teaching specialists to help develop these new courses and to include research-based teaching methods in the courses as well. The STN courses will be of interest to all undergraduates. They will combine core science with a societal application.

All STN and STL courses are listed in Course Offerings. Many STL and STN courses have prerequisites or are core courses for the science and engineering disciplines. Those STL and STN courses that do not carry significant prerequisites in science or engineering are listed in a separate menu item in Course Offerings (STL, STN, and QR Courses for General Education).

STC 349 Science Journalism (also JRN 349)   Fall SA

This course will help students (science majors and non-majors alike) to develop their skill at writing about science and technology for non-technical readers. Through class discussion, analysis of published writing, and especially through extensive writing exercises, participants will learn to present complex information with both clarity and style. Prerequisite: fulfillment of the writing requirement. One three-hour seminar. M. Lemonick

STC 398 Health and Human Rights in the World Community   Fall SA

This seminar will examine the relationship between health and human rights. It will provide an overview of human rights violations in the world today and an analysis of their health consequences. The course will consider how individual and community health can be improved by protecting and promoting human rights. It will also evaluate the role of health professionals in caring for victims of human rights abuses, documenting the health consequences of human rights violations, and participating in human rights advocacy and education.
