University Health Services

Every student is required to have health insurance coverage while enrolled at Princeton University. This health insurance must cover off-campus specialty care and hospitalization not provided at UHS. Undergraduate students may elect to enroll in the Princeton University Student Health Plan (SHP) or choose to waive out of automatic enrollment into the SHP by providing comparable insurance coverage on or before June 30th of each year. All graduate students are automatically enrolled in the SHP. Students may also elect to participate in optional vision and dental plans that provide benefits beyond those included in the SHP by the August 15th deadline of each year.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

All full time enrolled undergraduate students are required to be covered by the SHP for off-campus medical care and hospitalization unless they can demonstrate alternative coverage that meets the University's criteria. Students may waive coverage and the fee by returning the waiver form by the University published annual deadline date certifying that they have comparable coverage under another health insurance plan.

GRADUATE STUDENTS

All full time graduate students are required to be covered by the SHP for off-campus medical care and hospitalization. All costs associated with the SHP and the services based at UHS are included in the total tuition and required fees.  The Graduate Student Government provides answers to frequently asked questions regarding health services.

DEPENDENT AND FAMILY COVERAGE

A separate fee is charged to enroll dependents(PDF) in the SHP. Dependents aged 16 and over who are enrolled in the SHP have access to UHS services without additional charges.

SHP ENROLLMENT AFTER OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD

After the normal enrollment periods have ended, students may enroll in the SHP only if the following occurs:

• Their alternate insurance plan has been involuntarily terminated. Proof of termination must be presented to the SHP Office within 30 days of termination in order to enroll. Costs are prorated.
• Change in the marital status of the student / addition of new legal dependent or newborn baby. The child is automatically covered, with no fee, for 31 days from the date of birth. Students must complete an enrollment form within the first 31 days for coverage to continue. Costs are prorated.
• Only undergraduate students who were not enrolled at Princeton University for the fall semester qualify for the spring enrollment period.

PRESCRIPTION DRUG BENEFIT PROGRAM

AETNA NAVIGATOR

All Princeton University Student Health plan (SHP) insurance members (plan administered by Aetna Student Health) have access to Aetna Navigator, a secure member website packed with personalized benefits and health information. VITAL SAVINGS BY AETNA
