Sports Nutrition
forms and policies
The Nutrition Services clinical and sport dietitian serves as a member of the UHS Athletic Medicine staff to help promote optimal health and athletic performance for varsity student-athletes.
Sports nutrition plays an integral role in promoting athletic success by helping athletes stay healthy and optimally fuel themselves so they can maximize training and conditioning. An often over-looked component in many programs, smart nutrition planning can equate to greater gains in lean body mass, minimized fatigue related to poor hydration and under-fueling, and enhanced recovery which supports all future training and competition.

Individual Counseling
Individual counseling is ideal for student-athletes who may benefit from individualized recommendations for specific concerns. The sport dietitian can help with issues, including anemia, menstrual dysfunction, food allergies, poor recovery, fatigue, eating concerns, and weight management, among others. The sport dietitian can also provide medical nutrition therapy related to diabetes, Celiac and Crohn’s disease, and cardiovascular disease.
Small Group Educational Sessions
Small group educational sessions are ideal for groups of two to four student-athletes. The sport dietitian can answer general sports nutrition questions or provide guidance on specific topics such as proper fueling and hydration strategies for enhancing performance. Student-athletes should seek other interested individuals before contacting the sport dietitian to schedule a small group educational session.
Team Presentations
The sport dietitian is available to meet with teams regarding various topics, including hydration strategies, eating on the road, transitioning out of competitive athletics, nutrition for immune support, and recovering from injuries. Other topics are available by request. If your team is interested in a particular topic, please make a request through your coach.
Supplement Reviews
The Athletic Medicine Supplement Policy requires student-athletes who choose to utilize ergogenic aids and nutrition supplements to meet with the sport dietitian for a product evaluation. This consultation can help to ensure that student-athletes utilize safe and effective supplements.
Varsity athletes do not need a referral to schedule an appointment with the sport dietitian. However, if you have specific medical concerns including fatigue, diabetes, high blood pressure, digestive disorders and illness, make an appointment with your team physician.
