Detailed Information About Costs (in alphabetical order)
UHS provides comprehensive services to all eligible students regardless of their insurance carrier or coverage. Most services, including medical office visits, individual or group psychological counseling, travel planning, athletic medicine services, inpatient stays, Sexual Harassment/Assault Advising, Resources, and Education (SHARE) services, X-rays and some laboratory tests are available at no direct cost to the student.
Students may be assessed a fee for some specialized services. See below for detailed information.
Students may pay for services by cash, check, or MasterCard/Visa or have services billed directly to their student account.
If students go to the emergency room for care when UHS is closed, charges are processed according to the benefit provisions of the student’s health or insurance plan, and the remaining balances for emergency room treatment and services become the responsibility of the student.

CONTRACEPTIVES
Oral contraceptives are available at a fee that varies accordingly to manufacturer's cost. Up to 10 condoms at a time are available for free at the front desk reception area. Other forms of contraception can be obtained at local pharmacies. Coverage for prescriptions will vary depending upon your prescription coverage. Students on the SHP have prescription coverage through Medco.
COPIES OF MEDICAL RECORDS
Students will be charged $30 for copies of their health records and $10 for copies of their immunization record.
HIV TESTS
Rapid HIV testing is provided on site at UHS at no charge. For more information about costs and billing of Sexually Transmitted Illness (STI) tests, see below.
INCOMPLETE MATRICULATION REQUIREMENTS
Students who have not completed their required pre matriculation vaccines will be charged for any office visits associated with obtaining matriculation vaccines here on campus.
INCOMPLETE MEDICAL INFORMATION FORM
You may receive a $100 fine after August 30 if your record is incomplete.

LAB TESTS FOR WHICH THERE IS A CHARGE
If you are a graduate/undergraduate student or dependent on the Princeton University Student Health Plan (SHP):
Most labs are covered at 100% under the SHP. If you are on the SHP, you will need to provide Quest with your current Aetna Student Health medical identification card whenever you have lab tests performed at McCosh Health Center. Please bring your SHP/ Aetna card with you when accessing lab services and/or health care at UHS. Quest, in turn, will bill Aetna Student Health, which is the third party administrator for the Princeton University Student Health Plan. An explanation of benefits (EOB) will be sent to the address you have on file with Aetna. Aetna will process the claim and pay 100% of eligible charges. The deductible will not be applied to lab tests. Please note there are some exceptions; for example, immunization titers, fertility testing, and labwork for physical examinations are not covered by the plan.
If you do not wish any EOBs to go to the address you have on file with Aetna Student Health, please contact Aetna at: 1-877-437-6511 to provide the address you wish the EOB to be sent to.

If you are an undergraduate student or dependent on private health insurance (PHI):
If you are a dependent on private insurance or an undergraduate student who has elected to waive the Princeton University Student Health Plan and are on a private health insurance plan, whenever you have lab tests performed at McCosh Health Center you will need to provide Quest with your private insurance information. Quest may not be considered in network by your carrier. Quest will bill your insurance carrier, and the level of benefits coverage for lab charges will depend upon your private insurance coverage. It is recommended that you learn about the coverage provided by your private health insurance plan. Carry your insurance card and benefits information with you when accessing lab services and/or health care at UHS.
If you do not have any insurance information with you at the time of service and you want to submit the charges to your insurance carrier for reimbursement, you have two options:
- Have your blood drawn or provide your specimen and Quest will bill you at full price. When you receive the bill from Quest, you will need to call Quest and provide them with your insurance information, and ask them to re-bill your insurance carrier.
- Return to the lab at a later time with your insurance information, and have your blood drawn or provide your specimen at that time so that Quest can bill your insurance carrier directly.
Explanations of Benefits (EOBs) will be mailed by your insurance provider to the address they have on file for the policy holder. This address is frequently your parents’ address. If you do not wish the EOBs to go to the address on file for the policy holder, you will need to pay for services out of pocket. In these instances, provide Quest with your preferred billing address but do not provide your insurance information. Quest will send the bill to the address you provide and you will be responsible for payment.

MENTAL HEALTH LOAN PROGRAM
Graduate students or undergraduate students may apply for up to $1,250 in loans per semester to cover outside mental health counseling costs. The loan program may be used for:
- Deductibles
- Excess balances after payment by your health plan
- Continuation of therapy after the maximum benefits have been reached on your health plan
- The loan draws no interest until the student leaves the University. At this time, the loan is consolidated with any other financial obligations the student may have. If the student has no other loans with the University, the Mental Health Loan Program will be established as a long-term loan with the terms and conditions applicable to University educational loans.

MTV RENTALS
Students who have trouble walking due to an injury or another medical reason may rent an MTV upon referral from a UHS clinician, subject to availability. Students are responsible for rental fees. Students must complete a training program and sign a rental agreement. For more information about the MTV Rental Program, call (609) 258-3555.
NO SHOW FEES
Students are charged $15 if they do not call and cancel an appointment beforehand.
OFF CAMPUS EMERGENCY CARE
If students go to the emergency room for care, charges are processed according to the benefit provisions of the student’s health or insurance plan, and the remaining balances for emergency room treatment and services become the responsibility of the student. You will be asked to present your insurance card when you visit the emergency room or any other off-campus provider that accepts patient insurance plans.
ORTHOPEDIC SUPPLIES
Patients are charged for orthopedic supplies such as crutches, canes, braces, splints, cervical collars, cast boots, etc.
PHARMACY
Pharmacies are located on Nassau Street (CVS), at the Princeton Shopping Center (Rite Aid), or on University Place (Princeton Pharmacy). Students may utilize these pharmacies or any others to obtain prescriptions or over the counter medications. Students on the Student Health Plan have prescription benefits under Medco. If you are an undergraduate who has waived the Student Health Plan and chosen other private health insurance coverage, you should investigate and identify your prescription plan provider.
PHYSICAL THERAPY
Physical Therapy is provided in several locations on campus. To receive physical therapy services, see a clinician at UHS first in order to obtain a referral.
Students can access physical therapy at a site in Dillon gym on weekday mornings throughout the academic year. These services are offered at no charge to students.
Hamilton Physical Therapy (HPT): When Dillon physical therapy is closed, during the summer and during breaks, students can see an HPT physical therapist on site at McCosh Health Center. There is a charge for these services; students on the Student Health Plan have PT benefits under the SHP; students on private health insurance may or may not have coverage depending upon their plan benefits.
SPECIAL FINANCIAL NEEDS
Patients who have health care needs and do not have the financial resources to pay for healthcare services for which there is a charge may call (609) 258-3555 for assistance.
STAT LABS
If your lab work is sent on an urgent basis to the local hospital, there will be a charge. Your UHS provider will need to see your insurance card to submit the lab request. Your insurance will be billed by the hospital.
STI TESTING
UHS offers Gonorrhea and Chlamydia testing for $14.00.
The SHP covers the cost of STI testing; however, students on the SHP will need to pay $14.00 for chlamydia and gonorrrhea tests at the time of their visit, and submit a claim to their insurance carrier. Students on private insurance should also pay at the time of the visit and then submit a claim to their carrier. All students obtaining chlamydia and gonorrhea testing should request a “walk-out” statement (receipt) from the Check In/Check Out desk when their appointment is completed and they have finished paying for their testing. This receipt will allow students enrolled in the SHP to file a claim with Aetna Student Health, or for students with family/private insurance to file a claim with their carrier.
UHS is also able provide rapid HIV testing on site at UHS at no charge.
VACCINES/IMMUNIZATIONS
Students are charged a fee for all vaccines.
XRAY - FILMS
Patients who wish to obtain copies of past x-ray films will be charged $19.95 per film. There is also a charge for shipping.
XRAYS – DIGITAL IMAGES ON CD
Students who wish to obtain a CD with digital images will be charged $5 to cover the cost of the CD.
