Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS)
THE BASICS PROGRAM
What is the BASICS program?
BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students) is a UHS educational program, facilitated by Health Promotion and Wellness Services (HPW), designed to assist you in exploring your drinking behaviors in a non-confrontational way. The program takes a harm reduction approach, to reduce risky behavior and the potential harmful consequences of excessive alcohol use.
What will I be asked to do as a participant of the BASICS program?
The BASICS program involves: 1) an initial individual meeting with a BASICS provider, 2) the completion of an online assessment tool and 3) a second individual meeting, two weeks after the initial meeting, with the same provider. Both meetings will last 45-60 minutes. The online assessment tool, which takes 20-30 minutes to complete, will generate a personalized profile of your alcohol use and how it compares to other Princeton students. The BASICS provider will review these results with you to explore the consequences of your drinking-related choices, and help you consider possible ways to reduce risk in the future.
BASICS is a confidential service; no information that you share with the BASICS provider will be shared with other individuals without your written consent, except in cases where you or someone else may be in imminent danger.
What happens after I complete BASICS?
At the conclusion of your second BASICS meeting, the BASICS provider may give you additional recommendations for other services at UHS that may be helpful to you.
