Living On Campus
Attaching Items to the Walls
When hanging pictures and posters on your wall, be sure to use poster mounts, not nails, pins and screws. Nails, pins and screws will damage the wall in your room. Approved poster mounts are sold at the Princeton University Store as well as other retail stores. Heavy objects will damage walls, so we ask that students please consult the Housing Inspectors before hanging a heavy item. Note that mounting a flat screen TV on a dormitory wall is not permitted. If you would like to hang a bicycle in your room, our carpenters will install hooks for this purpose.
Your dorm room windows are fitted with screens and pull down shades. You may report a missing or broken shade or screen by contacting Facilities Customer Services or by completing an online work request. If you wish, you may hang curtains in your windows. It is best to measure your window and purchase your curtains after you arrive on campus.
Bulletin Boards and White Boards
Many dorms have white message boards attached to the wall adjacent to the dorm room entrance. If your dormitory does not have these boards, you may install your own (10"x12" or less) on the wall adjacent to your dorm room entry door using approved poster mounts. Fire Safety Policy prohibits hanging anything directly on your door.
If you choose, you may place a carpet or area rug in your room. Be sure that you do not attach it to the floor in any way and that it does not interfere with the free and full opening of your door. The Housing Department provides guidelines for putting carpet or area rugs in your dorm room. Floor sizes vary from room to room, so you may want to purchase a rug after your arrival on campus to insure that you purchase the appropriate size.
