Authorized Heat Producing Appliance Criteria
Approximately four times annually, the Housing Department will visit local merchants (Wal-Mart, Target, etc.) to see if there are any additional manufacturers and/or models that meet the University criteria for placement of appliances onto the authorized heat producing appliance list. If so, they are placed on the list and students are informed via a mass email. This authorized appliance list can be found at the Housing Dept. web site - http://www..princeton.edu/us/housing/inspections/
Students may submit a heat producing appliance for consideration to be placed on the University authorized appliance list. If a student wishes to do so, they should read the technical criteria then contact the Inspection Manager (kenpaul@princeton.edu or 8-3995) to make an appointment to bring the appliance to him. Please note, that disassembly of the appliance may be required to examine it.
If the student is requesting the appliance to be examined after it has been confiscated, the fine for the confiscation will stand since the appliance was not on the list at the time of confiscation.
When looking at heat producing appliances for acceptance to the authorized list, the University examines the appliance for:
- Coffee/Espresso/Cappuccino Makers
- a thermostat and in line fuse
- Iced Tea Makers
- a thermostat and in line fuse
- Hot Air Popper
- a thermostat and in line fuse
- no reservoir for heating butter/margarine
- Tea Kettle
- a thermostat and in line fuse
- a restricted opening/spout for inputting of water
The University requires a thermostat and an in line fuse in the above-mentioned to ensure that the appliance will turn off if a problem arises. The thermostat controls the temperature that the appliance can reach. The in line fuse acts as a back up to the thermostat. This device is important because if the thermostat fails, the fuse will blow and shut down the appliance.
The University does recognize that some of the appliances on the list are no longer in production. However, the appliance will remain on the list in case an appliance is passed along to sibling.
