The Plasma Physics Laboratory is one of the major centers in the world conducting research on magnetic fusion energy. Established in 1951, its facilities are used for large scale experiments designed to develop fusion as a safe, economical, and environmentally acceptable method of generating electricity for the longer term. In 2004 the U.S. Department of Energy selected PPPL as the U.S. project office for an international fusion experiment, ITER.
