An alumnus of Princeton University, Fazal Sheikh has worked to document and record the mass phenomena of the refugee since the early 90s—in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Kenya, Brazil, India, Mexico, and beyond. His work has been exhibited at the Tate Modern in London, the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation in Paris, the International Center of Photography and the United Nations in New York, the MAPFRE Foundation in Madrid, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow. It has garnered him the International Henri Cartier-Bresson Grand Prize, the Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography, the Prix d’Aries, and the Leica Medal of Excellence. He has received fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation and the National Endowment of the Arts and, in 2005, he was named a MacArthur Fellow. He will be speaking on the portraits he has been taking for the last two decades, and on his recent and ongoing project in Israel and the West Bank.
