Master Cadava welcomes you to Wilson College
Dear Class of 2017,
Welcome to Wilson College, your Princeton home for the next two years. Wilson College is the original residential college at Princeton. It evolved from the Woodrow Wilson Lodge, which was founded in 1957 by a dozen members of the Class of 1959 “to provide a place where individuals could be accepted for what they are," and it soon after was expanded by students from the Classes of 1960 and 1961 to provide even more social and intellectual alternatives within the Princeton campus. Today Wilson College is a diverse, vibrant community that still aims to meet these goals and we are looking forward to having you join our special community.
While you are a resident of Wilson College we expect you to...
· Study hard, play somewhat less hard, and combine the two as often as possible.
· Explore new disciplines, topics, and ideas. Take intellectual risks – it will never be easier or more rewarding.
· Become an engaged citizen of a thriving intellectual and social community.
The Wilson College staff is eager to help you accomplish these goals and to help you access the vast array of resources Princeton offers.
Dean Anne Caswell-Klein and Director of Studies, Dr. John Axcelson, will oversee your academic career from the time you enter Princeton until the time you graduate. During these years, you will have many advisers, but Dean Caswell-Klein and Dr. Axcelson will retain oversight of your academic progress and you always should feel free to contact either of them. Dr. Axcelson has special responsibility for the academic orientation and progress of the freshman class, so you may want to direct your questions and concerns to him this year, but both are ready to offer whatever assistance you may need.
Our Director of Student Life, Regan Crotty, works closely with the RCAs and the College Council to support social and cultural programs that serve all Wilson College students, from the first and second-year students in residence to the upper-class students who live elsewhere but remain part of our community. She also is responsible for coordinating support for students experiencing personal difficulties and takes the lead in our work to uphold community standards and respect for others.
Please see our College website homepage announcements for a welcome message from our advising team, Deans Caswell-Klein, Axcelson and Crotty, and to learn more about our Wilson community. You are now an essential member of our community, so we all hope that you will become involved! Wilson students run the Black Box dance club, created our ceramic studio, and founded the group "SpeakOut." What would you like to see happen this year?
· Want to stage a performance or start a singing group?
· Want to have dinner with a professor to talk about current political events?
· How about organizing a College-wide dodge-ball tournament?
I know you have wonderful ideas for activities and events – bring them to us and let’s see what we can create together.
I look forward to welcoming you in September and to meeting you at the freshman dinners I will hold at my home in the fall. Until then, I invite you to visit us on our College website and take our mobile device tour on Princeton’s mobile site m.princeton.edu (select TOURS and then select ‘Wilson College Tour’). I hope, and fully expect, that your first year at Princeton will be a rich and wonderful experience, and I look forward to meeting you all soon.
