J Street Multimedia Seminars this semester
Are you interested in developing your multimedia skills or in learning new ones? Then come out to J Street for a hands-on learning experience designed to help you take your creative ideas and bring them to life. Tuesday nights from 10pm-midnight, J Street Library and Media Center is offering a seminar focused on graphic design, audio production, animation, or video production. Choose from the offerings below and visit princeton.edu/jstreet.
February 18: Photo Post Processing:
Intro to Photo Post-Processing in Photoshop will give you the basics of how to take good photos and make them into great photos. We'll be working in RAW format, commonly referred to as "digital negative," that allows for a wider range of processing. However, the techniques you'll learn will apply broadly to editing JPG photos as well. You'll learn about exposure compensation, white balance, sharpness and noise, recovery, curves, brightness, contrast, vibrance, saturation, lens compensation, graduated filters, and more to give your photos that professional polish.
February 25: Graphic Design and Typography
Intro to Graphic Design and Typography will teach you the basics of graphic design as well as the technical tools and workflows you'll need to execute on your designs. We will cover graphical layout, including layering, masking, layer blending, layer effects, and color choice and manipulation. We will also cover the basics of effective and beautiful typography, which underpins successful design; this includes typeface choice, leading, tracking, kerning, and placement.
March 4: 3-D Modeling and Animation with Blender
Join us for an exciting and useful introduction to 3-D modeling and animation using Blender software! Blender is an open-source 3-D computer graphics software that can be used to create visual effects, video games, animated video, forensic reconstruction, and interactive 3-D applications. The session will cover an overview of the Blender interface, project navigation, basic object modeling, textures, lighting, and animation.
March 25: Video Post Production
Video Post Production will cover the intermediate skills you need to transform your rough-cut videos into a polished final product. This hands-on seminar will look at adding effects, transitions, titles, and graphics, as well as how to work with editing multiple audio and video tracks. If you have a project you’re working on, bring it along to edit as we learn. We will be using either Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro in this seminar.
April 1: Intro to Ableton:
Ableton Live is a digital audio workstation, allowing you to create music in its unique real-time capture mode. In this hands-on seminar, you’ll learn the basics of recording and mixing music in Ableton Live, creating your own original beats to share with others. Please note that this seminar will begin at 10:30 p.m.
April 8: Intro to Audio Recording:
Get an introduction to the process of audio recording with this seminar. We will cover set-up of recording equipment, capturing quality audio, and the basics of editing with Garage Band and/or Audacity. You’ll also have a chance to tour the J Street recording studio and test the audio equipment in the J Street lending program.
April 15: Intro to Video Production
Have an idea you want to film, but aren’t sure where to start? Hoping to get started on a film project this summer? This seminar will provide a basic overview of video production, looking at best practices for capturing quality video and the first steps for editing video clips in Adobe Premiere and/or Final Cut Pro.
