Sophomores: Fall 2013 course selection begins April 24th
I hope you all enjoyed a restful spring break. I’ll take advantage of this comparatively peaceful moment in the semester to remind you of the process for fall 2013 course registration. Hard to believe, but it’s just around the corner.
As you know, you will officially sign into a department before choosing your courses for next fall. This is an important step in your undergraduate career, and you should consider your choice of departmental concentration carefully. In the process of deciding, you should consult the Office of the Dean of the College advising webpage. It lists most of the major sources of information and outlines some of the factors you should consider when thinking about choosing a department. Also review thoroughly the Undergraduate Announcement for information about prerequisites and particular programs in each department and the Major Choices website for a list of interesting events and helpful information on choosing and declaring a major.
Departmental Open Houses
Each spring, departments provide a series of informational meetings for potential concentrators. A schedule of these meetings is available here. You should plan on attending the open houses for any department that interests you, because each department has its own specific procedures for entry, and the most efficient way to find out what those procedures involve is to attend the open house. If you cannot make the open house, please call the relevant department office for information. It is incumbent upon you to take the initiative in selecting your concentration. Do not wait until the last minute to ask questions or find out answers! Many departments have a list of faculty, including the departmental representative, who are available to answer questions you may have about programs of study; they can also tell you what you can do if you have not fulfilled all of the prerequisites for entry into the department. A list of departmental contacts is available here.
You should print your Internal Transcript from SCORE in advance of your meeting with your new department. The Internal Transcript lists your test credits, courses and grades for past semesters, and courses in which you are currently enrolled. To print your Internal Transcript/Academic Record, Log on to SCORE and then click on the Student Center link. In the ‘other academic’ search box (located a few inches beneath your name), click the down arrow and select View My Academic Record.
All current students have received an e-mail message from the Registrar’s Office with the detailed information, including dates, for course selection; for your convenience, I have attached that message here.
As you join a department, keep in mind that your connection to the college will continue next year. While most junior year advising takes place in your department, Dean Herschbach will be your administrative contact for non-departmental advising. Do not hesitate to consult with either of us on any non-routine matters.
Keep in mind
Spring mid-term grades in those courses that report them are now available on SCORE.
The P/D/F selection period for this semester, spring 2013, is March 25-April 12.
