A. Watch-standing and Bridge Duties
- Stand watches as Quartermaster of the Watch (QMOW) underway and in port. E-4
- Locate and operate during darkness all switches for navigation running lights, anchor, and emergency lights. E-4
- Solve basic maneuvering board problems in course, speed, closest point of approach (CPA), and time. E-5
- Make all navigational bridge preparations for getting the ship underway; test engine order telegraph, annunciator, steering control, ship's whistle, and chemical alarms for proper operation. E-5
- Set up maneuvering board to indicate tactical organization and disposition of own force. E-6
B. Honors and Ceremonies
- Render passing honors to naval ships, gigs and barges. E-4
- Identify national, merchant, and personal flags of principal maritime and naval powers. E-4
C. Records, Charts, and Publications
- Correct Sailing Directions, Light Lists, Coast Pilots, and related publications. Recognize all symbols used on navigational charts. E-4
- Obtain data and make entries in quatermaster notebook, rough deck log, and data sheet, using standard terminology, phraseology, and scale for wind, weather, sea, and clouds. E-4
- Catalog, correct, and stow charts and other navigational publications. E-4
- Use and apply data contained in Coast Pilots, Sailing Directions, Light Lists, Tide and Current Tables, and related publications commonly used in solved navigational problems. E-5

- Obtain information and prepare hydrographic and oceanographic reports (echograms, B/T log sheets, wave observation log, ship's ice log, sounding journal, and adjusted track charts) for shipments, in accordance with Navy Regulations and current OPNAV instructions. E-6
D. Steering
- Shift to alternate emergency steering methods of control and power. E-4
- Qualify as steersman, observing standard procedures for acknowledging orders to wheel, and for making reports to conning officer during execution. Shift steering control to and from the various steering control stations. E-4
- Setup zigzag plans and/or the sinuous course clock for use in evasive steering. E-5
- Steer ship in restricted waters when making landings and when going alongside a ship at sea. Demonstrate effect of engines and rudder on vessel. E-6
E. Magnetic Compass and Gyrocompass
- Provide speed and latitude data to gyro electrician for gyrocompass correction. E-4
- Compensate magnetic compass. Determine deviation by use of azimuth of sun, reciprocal bearings, visual ranges, and gyrocompass. Prepare deviation tables, with degaussing on and off. E-6
F. Degaussing
- Apply corrections to degaussing coils due to changes in course. E-4

H. Time and Timepieces
- Compute sunrise and sunset, and moonrise and moonset from nautical almanac. E-4

I. Navigation and Related Equipment
- Set up and use bearing circle, azimuth circle, alidade, and stadimeter for obtaining navigational data; observe and work an azimuth of the sun. E-4
