| Laptops
Several campus libraries have laptops that you may borrow for in-building use. Ask at Firestone Reserves, or at the Engineering, Marquand, Psychology, or Stokes libraries. Machines are equipped with the Microsoft Office suite of software and cables (long and short) for connecting to the Internet at worktables throughout the library. Many seating areas in Firestone Library and in the branch libraries, have data ports and electrical outlets conveniently at hand so that users with laptops can both use them and connect them to the campus network. For instructions on how to connect your laptop to the campus network, consult OIT's help page on Mobile computing. Wireless Access in the Libraries (see the
detailed version of this info)

| Printing from the new printers in campus libraries:
(print jobs may be picked up from any print release station in the libraries) 1) After you click the print icon on the browser toolbar to print the desired document (click on the print button rather than using File pull-down menu--if you do the latter, you'll have a choice of print options, but you must choose the Xerox printer.), a menu will pop up. 2) Enter your userid (NETID), and then, if you wish, though it is not necessary, you can make up a password for added security (to insure that no one else will print your job accidentally). 3) Go to the PHAROS Print Release Station (next to the big Xerox printer), and type in your userid (NETID) and Princeton NT password, which may differ from your e-mail password.* 4) Highlight your document and click print. Then, if you've created an optional password, enter it. 5) Print job will be released from either station on the same side. *If you don't remember or have never used your NT password, please contact OIT at 8-help from any campus phone. |
| double-sided vs. single sided printing
To change to double-sided or back to single, go to File-->Print and click on the Layout tab. The middle box entitled "Print on both sides--duplex" should have the "None" radio button checked for single-sided, and "flip on long edge" for double sided. |
| paper jams
Usually, the paper is jammed in the inner recesses of the printer and is very hard to get to. If you've removed the toner cartridge and still cannot determine the cause of the jam, the best way to do this is: open the door that has MBF lightly written on it at the front of the printer. Only open this door slightly, so that it remains essentially vertical, and slide the whole paper tray out a few inches. Then try removing the toner cartridge. Usually this will reveal the cause of the jam. Contact lsupport@princeton.edu if this doesn't work. |
| Is it possible to hook a laptop up and print to
one of the printers?
No. Best solution is to email the document to yourself, and use webmail on the one of the library web computers to open it, and then print. |
| What if patron wasn't given a password?
Some people coming to us from the access office are not getting passwords, and this will be a problem when staff are not available. Mention that non-Princeton users (visitors, alumni, spouses, guests) need to get a password from the access office and give the hours of the office. |
| general troubleshooting
On the reference DESK machine labelled Lib-Eng024, there are 2 troubleshooting programs. Clicking on the icon "Pharos remote" (userid: pharosremote and password: pharo$remote) will show you the current status of printing jobs for each machine in the library system--double-click the GHRD folder to view who is printing what on our printers. Clicking on the "Xerox printer" icon will yield information about paper and toner levels, as well as paper jams, for each printer in DR. |
Floppy discs, CD drives, H: drives and zip drives

CDs and Zip drives:

| Some plugins will install automically, as needed. Others will require administrative priveleges, and a message will pop up indicating this. Cancel this installation immediately, and write to lsupport@princeton.edu indicating your need for this plugin on a library machine. |
| The best place to read Mac discs is in the OIT cluster on B-floor. This is also the best place to go if the user wants a computing environment identical to a campus computing cluster. OIT maintains a database of frequently encountered computer problems called the knowledgebase. |
| Using endnote with
the catalog.
General explanation of how to use endnote, with a detailed example of how to export/import from silverplatter databases. You must use the method described therein to bring database records into endnote; at the moment we cannot connect directly to endnote via any of the databases. Refworks is another bibliographic management utility, but is "portable," i.e., web-based, and freely available to all users with a Princeton NETID. See Using Refworks at Princeton for more info. |
Ftping files to your princeton account (a good way to transfer if data won't fit on a floppy disc)

| A common question we get is where can I use a typewriter? With many grad school, business school, law school applications still not available via computer, typewriters are still requested. We can refer to Frist. Frantz Student Activity Center is located on the 200 Level of the Campus Center. It has a typewriter. |
