Allendale Charter Township is a charter township of Ottawa County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township population was 13,042. The 2009 population estimate is 19,691. It is a part of the Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland, Michigan combined statistical area, and is an exurb of Grand Rapids, due to its major commuter routes into the city (M-45 and I-96).

Malta was initially chosen as the name for the township; however when the township was organized in 1849, state senator Pennoyer changed the name to Allendale, after Agnes Allen, the first person on the tax roll in the area and the widow of Hannibal Allen, who was the son of Revolutionary War hero Ethan Allen.[3]



There are no incorporated municipalities within the township.

  • Allendale is a census-designated place consisting of the northern two-thirds of the township and the Allendale ZIP code 49401 serves most of the township except for the westernmost portion and small areas along the southern boundary.[4] The main campus of Grand Valley State University is located here.
  • Grand Haven is to the northwest, and the Grand Haven ZIP code 49417 serves the northwestern corner of Allendale Township.[5]
  • West Olive is to the southwest, and the West Olive ZIP code 49460 serves the west central portion of Allendale Township.[6]
  • Zeeland is to the southwest, and the Zeeland ZIP code 49464 serves the southwest portion of Allendale Township.[7]
  • Hudsonville is to the southeast, and the Hudsonville ZIP code serves a small area on the central part of the southern boundary of Allendale Township.[8]
  • Jenison is to the southeast, and the Jenison ZIP code 49428 serves a small area in the southeast corner of the Allendale Township.[9]
  • Pearline, also known as East Allendale, is an unincorporated community about one mile east east of Allendale on M-45/Lake Michigan Dr. at 42°58′20″N 85°55′27″W / 42.97222°N 85.92417°W / 42.97222; -85.92417 (Pearline, Michigan).[10] Fruit grower Joh W. Everhart was the first postmaster of a rural post office here, which operated from April 29, 1891 until May 31, 1908.[11]
