Bootjack is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Mariposa County, California, United States.[1] Bootjack is located 4.5 miles (7.2 km) east-southeast of Mariposa,[2] at an elevation of 2238 feet (682 m).[1] The population was 1,588 at the 2000 census.



Bootjack is located at 37°27′54″N 119°53′12″W / 37.465°N 119.88667°W / 37.465; -119.88667.[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 18.0 square miles (46.7 km²), of which, 18.0 square miles (46.6 km²) of it is land and 0.06% is water.


Three versions are current of how the town was named.[2] The first, a fork in the road made a bootjack shape (basically, a "Y").[2] The second, is that a landmark tree at the place had a bootjack shape.[2] And third, that after a horse thief's hanging at the place a bootjack was used to remove his boots.[2]


As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 1,588 people, 636 households, and 471 families residing in the community. The population density was 88.2 people per square mile (34.0/km²). There were 744 housing units at an average density of 41.3/sq mi (15.9/km²). The racial makeup of the community was 92.13% White, 0.31% Black or African American, 4.09% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 1.07% from other races, and 2.14% from two or more races. 4.47% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
