Brookston is a town in Prairie Township, White County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,717 as of the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.5 km²), all land.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,717 people, 691 households, and 503 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,895.8 people per square mile (1,123.6/km²). There were 723 housing units at an average density of 1,219.4/sq mi (473.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.89% White, 0.06% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.17% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.46% of the population.

There were 691 households out of which 36.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.0% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 23.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.91.
