Butler Township is a civil township in northeastern Branch County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township population was 1,362.

There are no incorporated municipalities in the primarily agricultural township. The only concentrated settlements are two unincorporated communities:


The township is drained by tributaries of the St. Joseph River: the north and south branches of Hog Creek, Tekonsha Creek, and Soap Creek.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 35.8 square miles (92.6 km²), of which, 35.6 square miles (92.3 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (0.34%) is water.


As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,362 people, 431 households, and 349 families residing in the township. The population density was 38.2 per square mile (14.8/km²). There were 459 housing units at an average density of 12.9/sq mi (5.0/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 96.99% White, 0.59% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.07% from other races, and 1.98% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.22% of the population.

There were 431 households out of which 42.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.4% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.0% were non-families. 16.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.16 and the average family size was 3.56.
