Coal Creek, locally known as Coal Creek Canyon, is a census-designated place (CDP) in Boulder, Gilpin, and Jefferson counties in the U.S. state of Colorado. The population was 2,323 at the 2000 census.



Coal Creek is located at 39°54′32″N 105°23′12″W / 39.90889°N 105.38667°W / 39.90889; -105.38667 (39.908835, -105.386801)[2].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.4 square miles (24.4 km²), of which, 9.4 square miles (24.4 km²) of it is land and 0.11% is water.


As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 2,323 people, 985 households, and 650 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 246.4 people per square mile (95.1/km²). There were 1,168 housing units at an average density of 123.9/sq mi (47.8/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 95.52% White, 0.17% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.99% Asian, 1.16% from other races, and 1.68% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.79% of the population.

There were 985 households out of which 28.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.5% were married couples living together, 4.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% were non-families. 21.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 2.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.77.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 38.5% from 25 to 44, 31.4% from 45 to 64, and 4.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 116.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 116.6 males.
