Dunkirk is a village in Hardin County, Ohio, United States. As of the 2000 census, it had a population of 952.

Geography

Dunkirk is located at 40°47′19″N 83°38′41″W / 40.78861°N 83.64472°W / 40.78861; -83.64472 (40.788588, -83.644688)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.9 km²), of which, 0.7 square miles (1.7 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (8.22%) is water.

History

In 2006, Dunkirk was identified by the Ohio Department of Transportation as a potential junction for the Ohio Hub high-speed rail project.[4]

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 952 people, 361 households, and 276 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,428.6 people per square mile (548.6/km²). There were 396 housing units at an average density of 594.3/sq mi (228.2/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.63% White, 0.11% Native American, 0.21% Asian, and 1.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.21% of the population.

There were 361 households out of which 38.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.9% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.3% were non-families. 21.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the village the population was spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 102.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.9 males.
