Ellis County (county code EL) is a county located in Northwest Kansas, in the Central United States. The population was estimated to be 26,926 in the year 2006.[1] Its county seat and most populous city is Hays.[2]

The Hays Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Ellis County.

Law and government

Ellis County was a prohibition, or "dry", county until the Kansas Constitution was amended in 1986 and voters approved the sale of alcoholic liquor by the individual drink with a 30% food sales requirement. The food sales requirement was removed with voter approval in 1988.[3]

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 900 square miles (2,331.0 km2), virtually all of which is land.[4]
