Fayette is a city in Howard County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,793 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Howard County[3]. It is in the Columbia, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area.



Fayette is located at 39°8′44″N 92°41′10″W / 39.14556°N 92.68611°W / 39.14556; -92.68611 (39.145468, -92.686126)[4]. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.8 km²), all of it land.


As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,793 people, 976 households, and 578 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,253.6 people per square mile (483.6/km²). There were 1,133 housing units at an average density of 508.5/sq mi (196.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 79.16% White, 18.33% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.93% of the population.
