Greenwood is a town in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,458 at the 2000 census. It is part of the ShreveportBossier City Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Caddo Parish Sheriff J. Howell Flournoy, who served a record twenty-six years in office from 1940-1966, was born in Greenwood in 1891.[1]

Geography

Greenwood is located at 32°26′10″N 93°57′50″W / 32.43611°N 93.96389°W / 32.43611; -93.96389 (32.436051, -93.963902)[2].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 7.8 square miles (20.2 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 2,458 people, 964 households, and 701 families residing in the town. The population density was 315.5 people per square mile (121.8/km²). There were 1,036 housing units at an average density of 133.0/sq mi (51.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 77.01% White, 20.63% African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.79% of the population.

There were 964 households out of which 35.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the town the population was spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 28.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.7 males.
