Hamilton City (formerly, Hamilton)[1] is a census-designated place (CDP) in Glenn County, California, United States. The population was 1,903 at the 2000 census. Hamilton City is located 9.5 miles (15 km) east of Orland,[1] at an elevation of 151 feet (46 m).[2] The default numbers used for wired telephones in Hamilton City are (530) 826-xxxx. Signature features

The community is located along the Sacramento River near Mile 199. Gianella Bridge gets traffic on SR32 across the river. A local landmark, known to all locals, is Hamilton Union High School. Landmark grain elevators, originally Holly Sugar Corporation, and served by California Northern Railroad are visible from all over town. Glenn-Colusa Canal marks the west extent of the town.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²), all of it land.


The town began in 1905 with the founding of a large sugar beet processing plant.[1] The first post office at Hamilton City opened in 1906.[1] The name honors J.G. Hamilton, sugar company president.[1]


As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 1,903 people, 513 households, and 431 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 6,043.9 people per square mile (2,370.2/km²). There were 543 housing units at an average density of 1,724.6/sq mi (676.3/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 38.10% White, 0.37% Black or African American, 1.21% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 56.38% from other races, and 3.63% from two or more races. 80.56% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
