Hampstead is a town in Carroll County in the U.S. state of Maryland. The population was 5,060 at the 2000 census.[1]



Hampstead is located at 39°36′37″N 76°51′5″W / 39.61028°N 76.85139°W / 39.61028; -76.85139 (39.610303, -76.851493).[2]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.7 square miles (6.9 km²).None of the area is covered with water.

Hampstead is approximately three miles south of Manchester, and 6 miles east of Westminster.


As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 5,060 people, 1,787 households, and 1,327 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,887.1 people per square mile (729.0/km²). There were 1,851 housing units at an average density of 690.3/sq mi (266.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.79% White, 0.79% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.06% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.09% of the population.

There were 1,787 households out of which 50.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.3% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% were non-families. 21.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.83 and the average family size was 3.32.

In the town the population was spread out with 34.7% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 39.5% from 25 to 44, 14.2% from 45 to 64, and 5.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.0 males.
