Hanapepe (literally, "crushed bay" in Hawaiian[1]) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kauai County, Hawaii, United States. The population was 2,153 at the 2000 census.



Hanapepe was one of the locations visited by the United States Exploring Expedition under Charles Wilkes; the expedition arrived in Hawaii in late September, 1840, and spent some time in the islands. It is one of the few towns on the island that was not created by the sugar plantations. In the 1920s, a deadly mishap, later dubbed the Hanapepe Massacre, occurred in Hanapepe.

Hanapepe is the headquarters location for the ice cream company Lappert's Hawaii, as well as home to the western-most bookstore in the United States, Talk Story Bookstore[2]. It was the inspiration for the hometown of the main characters in the Disney animated film Lilo & Stitch.[3]


Hanapepe is located at 21°54′59″N 159°35′25″W / 21.91639°N 159.59028°W / 21.91639; -159.59028 (21.916392, -159.590414)[4].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.0 square miles (2.5 km²), of which, 0.9 square miles (2.3 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (10.31%) is water.


As of the census[5] of 2000, there were 2,153 people, 706 households, and 533 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,469.8 people per square mile (955.5/km²). There were 757 housing units at an average density of 868.4/sq mi (336.0/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 16.02% White, 0.09% African American, 0.28% Native American, 48.58% Asian, 8.50% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 26.29% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.64% of the population.
