Herscher is a village in Kankakee County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,523 at the 2000 census. It is part of the KankakeeBradley Metropolitan Statistical Area and the ChicagoNapervilleMichigan City, IL-IN-WI Combined Statistical Area.

Geography

Herscher is located at 41°3′3″N 88°5′43″W / 41.05083°N 88.09528°W / 41.05083; -88.09528 (41.050716, -88.095404)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.7 square miles (4.5 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,523 people, 533 households, and 430 families residing in the village. The population density was 883.1 people per square mile (341.9/km²). There were 554 housing units at an average density of 321.2/sq mi (124.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.96% White, 0.20% African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.26% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.53% of the population.

There were 533 households out of which 43.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.9% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.3% were non-families. 17.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.21.
