Koi (?, English /ˈkɔɪ/, Japanese: [koꜜi]) or more specifically nishikigoi (錦鯉?, [niɕi̥kiꜜɡo.i], literally "brocaded carp"), are ornamental domesticated varieties of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio) that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor koi ponds or water gardens.

Koi are among the longest-living vertebrates, with some animals living over 200 years.[citation needed] The most popular category of koi is the Gosanke, which is made up of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, and Showa Sanshoku varieties.[2]

The Japanese name means "Carp like Beautiful textile." Nishiki(錦、ニシキ) means "its like Beautiful textile," Koi(鯉、コイ) or Goi(鯉、ゴイ) mean "Carp".
