Leake County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population was 20,940. Its county seat is Carthage[1]. The center of population of Mississippi is located in Leake County, in the town of Lena [1]. Leake County is named for Walter Leake, the Governor of Mississippi from 1822 to 1825.



According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 585 square miles (1,516 km²), of which, 583 square miles (1,509 km²) of it is land and 3 square miles (7 km²) of it (0.46%) is water.
