Liberty County is a county located in the U.S. state of Montana. As of 2000, the population was 2,158. Its county seat is Chester.[1] It was established in 1920.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,447 square miles (3,748 km²), of which, 1,430 square miles (3,703 km²) of it is land and 17 square miles (45 km²) of it (1.21%) is water.

There were 1,070 housing units at an average density of 1 per square mile (0/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 99.21% White, 0.09% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.28% from two or more races. 0.19% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 39.0% were of German, 20.0% Norwegian, 7.2% English, 5.8% American and 5.0% Irish ancestry according to Census 2000. 84.5% spoke English and 15.5% German as their first language.
