It's important to note that the Vice President of the United States has the additional duty of President of the Senate. Because the number of seats in the United States Senate is an even number, with a total of 100 senators (2 senators per state), it's the Vice President's job as President of the Senate to cast a tie-breaking vote in the event of a voting deadlock. A voting deadlock would be if there were a 50/50 tie in votes.
